Kanak Bhawan

The golden palace of Sita and Ram

Kanak Bhawan — the “house of gold” — is among the most beautiful buildings in Ayodhya. Tradition holds that Queen Kaikeyi presented this palace to Sita when she arrived as Ram’s bride, and that it was the couple’s private residence.

The present palace-temple was built in 1891 by Queen Vrishbhanu Kunwari of Orchha (Tikamgarh). Behind its arched, Bundela-style facade is a broad courtyard and a sanctum with idols of Ram and Sita wearing golden crowns.

Top things to do at Kanak Bhawan

See the three pairs of idols

The sanctum holds three sets of images of Ram and Sita of different sizes and ages, all dressed and crowned in gold. Darshan is unhurried compared with the Ram Mandir.

Sit in the courtyard

Groups of devotees sing bhajans here through the day, and musicians often perform in the evening. It is one of the calmest places in the old town to rest for a while.

Admire the architecture

Look for the projecting balconies, cusped arches and painted ceilings — a mix of Rajput and Bundelkhand styles that sets the building apart from Ayodhya’s other temples.
